Ford Motor Company continues to explore new ways to make its vehicles more useful beyond transportation alone. A newly published patent outlines a concept for removable power outlet boxes that could expand how drivers use built-in vehicle power in future Ford models.

In recent years, Ford has introduced and refined features like Pro Power Onboard, allowing trucks to function as mobile generators for tools, appliances, and recreational gear. This latest patent builds on that idea by making bed-mounted power outlets portable, rather than fixed in place.

According to the patent filing, the removable power outlet box would function much like a portable cord reel. Owners could detach the unit from its mounting location, extend the cord, and power equipment that is located farther away from the vehicle. This could be especially useful on job sites, campsites, or outdoor events where flexibility matters.

Despite being removable, the outlet box would still operate just like existing Ford onboard power systems. It would draw energy from the vehicle’s engine or battery pack, allowing continued use as long as there is fuel or sufficient charge available. That means no separate generator would be required for many everyday tasks.
As with all patent filings, this concept does not guarantee production. However, it highlights Ford’s ongoing focus on practical innovation and customer-first design. By rethinking how built-in vehicle power can be accessed and used, ideas like removable power outlet boxes show how future Ford vehicles could become even more capable tools for work and play.
