The electric vehicle market has evolved quickly since the debut of the Ford F-150 Lightning and E-Transit, and Ford is adjusting its strategy to meet changing customer demand. While both current models continue to serve today’s EV buyers, the Blue Oval is shifting its focus toward smaller, more affordable electric vehicles. As part of this pivot, the next-generation full-size Ford EV pickup and van have been delayed once again, with production now scheduled for 2028.
The future F-150 EV – internally known as Project T3 – was initially expected to launch this year, but its timeline has been repeatedly revised, moving from 2026 to 2027, and now 2028. Similarly, the upcoming next-generation full-size E-Transit van, once projected to arrive in 2026, has also been pushed back to 2028. Despite these delays, Ford emphasizes that the current Lightning and E-Transit remain strong offerings in their respective markets.
“F-150 Lightning, America’s best-selling electric truck, and E-Transit continue to meet today’s customer needs,” a Ford spokesperson explained. The company also reiterated its commitment to the Ford+ plan, aiming to align production schedules with profitability and real-world demand rather than rushing new models to market. Prototypes of Project T3 are still expected to begin testing in 2027 at Ford’s BlueOval City site.
In the meantime, Ford is placing a major emphasis on next-generation affordable EVs. This includes a new mid-size electric pickup and a small crossover, both designed to broaden the brand’s appeal with lower costs and more accessible pricing. These vehicles are slated to launch in 2027 and 2028, showing that while Ford’s larger EVs may take longer to arrive, the automaker is pushing forward aggressively with new electrified options for a wide range of buyers.
