The Ford Mustang has been an icon of performance and style since its 1964 debut, but one body style has always remained out of reach – a four-door sedan. For decades, enthusiasts have speculated about whether Ford would ever expand the Mustang lineup with a family-friendly version, and rumors have only intensified in recent years. While concept renderings and internal discussions have surfaced, it now appears that a production Mustang sedan is still several years away.
According to Automotive News, the Ford Mustang four-door sedan isn’t expected to reach production until at least 2028, or possibly later. This future model could carry the name Mach 4, a trademark Ford filed in the United States and other global markets in early 2024. If built, the four-door Mustang would likely be sold worldwide, signaling Ford’s intent to broaden the pony car’s reach beyond its traditional two-door roots.
Talk of a four-door Mustang isn’t new. As far back as 2018, reports surfaced of Ford exploring such a model, with early concepts shown to dealers. By 2020, rumors grew stronger, and in May 2024, CEO Jim Farley even acknowledged the possibility, noting that if a Mustang sedan were to happen, it must deliver “all the performance and attitude of the original.” This suggests Ford is committed to ensuring that any four-door variant lives up to the Mustang’s legendary reputation.
The platform for a future Mustang sedan has yet to be confirmed. Analysts suggest it could share the same S650 architecture as the current Mustang coupe and convertible, or it might utilize the CD6 platform already underpinning the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator. Either way, the idea of a Mustang with four doors is no longer just speculation—it’s an evolving concept that could reshape the pony car’s legacy for the modern era.
