Ford’s next generation of electric vehicles is beginning to take shape, and it won’t revolve around just one new model. According to a new report from Ford Authority, Ford plans to build five different vehicles on its new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, creating a flexible foundation for a broader family of more affordable EVs. The first will be the upcoming Ford Fathom, a midsize electric pickup scheduled to launch in 2027. Ford executives reportedly told dealers at a recent meeting in Las Vegas that four additional vehicles will eventually join the Fathom on the Universal EV Platform. Ford has designed the architecture to accommodate a wide variety of vehicles, ranging from small cars to commercial vans. Ford Authority
One of those future vehicles is expected to be a familiar name. Ford Authority has previously reported that the Ford Escape is planned to return as an all-electric compact crossover in 2029, using the Universal EV Platform. Beyond that, Ford’s broader roadmap has included possibilities such as two- and three-row SUVs, sedans and a van, although Ford has not officially confirmed which four models will ultimately make up the five-vehicle lineup. The “universal” part of the platform is important. Instead of engineering an entirely different foundation for every EV, Ford has developed an architecture that can be adapted to different vehicle sizes and body styles. Ford says it can support vehicles ranging from B-segment cars up to commercial vans, while also accommodating different battery chemistries and form factors as battery technology evolves. Efficiency is also central to the project. Ford designed the platform and its new manufacturing process together with the goal of reducing complexity, production time and ultimately vehicle cost. Ford has previously said vehicles using the architecture can require 20 percent fewer parts than a typical vehicle, while its new production system is designed to simplify how major sections of a vehicle come together during assembly. For EV shoppers in BC, the bigger story may be choice. Instead of asking customers to adapt their needs to a limited selection of electric models, Ford’s strategy could eventually offer EVs across several familiar vehicle categories. The Fathom will give us the first look at what Ford’s Universal EV Platform can do, but it’s increasingly clear that the truck is intended to be the beginning of a much larger family.
