One of the biggest questions about electric trucks is simple: can they really tow like their gas-powered counterparts? A recent real-world test put the all-electric 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat to the ultimate challenge by towing a 10,000-pound trailer carrying an electric Humvee. The results? Impressive. Not only did the Lightning rise to the occasion, but it also managed to outperform a Rivian R1T tested under nearly identical conditions.
The Lightning started with a predicted 310 miles of range and quickly proved its capability. Even while pulling the massive load, it launched from 0-60 mph in just 12.3 seconds—virtually identical to the Rivian’s 12-second result. On the road, the Lightning impressed with its accurate range estimates, advanced driver information displays, and regenerative braking system that converted heavy trailer momentum back into usable energy.
After covering 112 miles of mostly highway driving, the Lightning still had 18 miles of range left—roughly 30 miles more than the Rivian achieved in the same scenario. While factors like warmer spring weather and street tires may have given the Lightning an advantage, the test still highlights how capable Ford’s EV truck is when it comes to serious towing. Features like the trailer backup assist system further add to its practicality, making hauling easier and safer for drivers of all experience levels.
Charging was equally convenient. At a 150 kW fast charger, the Lightning added 90% of its battery capacity in about 35–40 minutes, giving another 100 miles of towing range. The tester summed it up best: Ford has done something special with the Lightning—delivering true F-150 power and capability with the innovation and efficiency of an EV.
