One of the biggest advantages of today’s connected vehicles is that they can continue improving long after leaving the dealership. That’s exactly what’s happening for 2024 Ford F-150 owners. BlueCruise 1.4 brings some meaningful improvements to Ford’s hands-free highway driving technology. Ford says the newer software can remain engaged in hands-free mode up to eight times longer on average than the original BlueCruise system and five times longer than BlueCruise 1.2. It also reduces deviations from the centre of the lane by nearly 80 percent compared with version 1.0, helping provide a smoother and more confident experience on compatible highways.
The update also brings some useful functionality to 2024 F-150 owners. Lane Change Assist enables hands-free lane changes, while In-Lane Repositioning can subtly adjust the truck’s position within its lane to provide additional space when travelling beside vehicles such as transport trucks. Those improvements should be particularly welcome on longer highway drives, where BlueCruise is designed to reduce some of the workload behind the wheel.
Interestingly, 2024 F-150 owners have had to wait a little longer for this upgrade. BlueCruise 1.4 began arriving on 2025 F-150 models in 2025, followed by updates for 2022 and 2023 trucks. Ford explains that upgrading an existing vehicle isn’t as simple as updating a smartphone. Every model and model year requires its own BlueCruise software package, and an update can involve multiple vehicle modules and in-vehicle displays.
For F-150 owners here in BC, the update could be especially useful on longer highway trips. Whether you’re heading up the Sea-to-Sky, travelling through the Interior, or setting out on a longer road trip, an improved hands-free driving system can make compatible stretches of highway more relaxing. BlueCruise remains a driver-assistance technology, however, so drivers still need to remain attentive and ready to take control when required.
Perhaps the most interesting part of this update is what it says about modern vehicle ownership. A 2024 F-150 is now receiving substantially improved driving technology roughly two years after it was built, without owners needing to trade their truck for a newer model. As Ford continues expanding its over-the-air software capabilities, upgrades like BlueCruise 1.4 demonstrate how a connected Ford can gain meaningful new functionality even after it’s already sitting in your driveway.
