The Ford Expedition was fully redesigned for the 2025 model year with bold styling, a modern interior, and exciting new trims like the off-road-ready Tremor. But as always in the automotive world, more updates are on the horizon. According to a new report, the full-size SUV is scheduled for a mid-cycle refresh in 2028, and it could finally bring a long-rumored hybrid powertrain.
Rumors of a hybrid Expedition have circulated for years, even as part of the 2025 redesign, but Ford’s broader electrification strategy makes the 2028 update seem far more likely. The automaker previously announced plans to offer hybrid options across its internal combustion lineup by 2030, which puts the Expedition firmly in line for this upgrade.
While Ford hasn’t confirmed the exact setup, comments from CEO Jim Farley suggest that an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) or advanced hybrid system could be on the table. Farley noted that hybrids and plug-in hybrids offer the best mix of long-distance capability and affordability, with the potential to deliver over 700 miles of range on one tank of gas while still enabling most daily driving on electric power alone.
The Expedition has always been a go-to for families needing space, comfort, and capability for long road trips. If the 2028 refresh does bring hybrid technology, it will not only reduce fuel costs but also strengthen the SUV’s appeal in a market increasingly seeking efficient alternatives without compromising utility.
