The Ford Mustang may soon enter a bold new chapter. According to new reports, Ford currently has an S650 Mustang Hybrid in development, with test vehicles already running under the internal name “S650E.” This marks a major step forward in combining the Mustang’s legendary performance heritage with the efficiency and torque benefits of hybrid technology.

Ford first announced plans for a hybrid Mustang back in 2017, when the company revealed a $700 million investment in its Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan. The project was initially slated for a 2020 debut but never materialized. Now, insiders say the hybrid pony car has reached the Technology Prove-Out stage, meaning prototypes are being tested with some form of electrification.
While Ford has not confirmed whether this Mustang will feature a traditional or plug-in hybrid system, the automaker has made its goals clear. By 2030, every model in the Ford Blue lineup is expected to include a hybrid powertrain option, and the Mustang remains a key piece of that strategy.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has also hinted that partial electrification is the right path for performance models. In 2023, Farley ruled out a fully electric Mustang coupe for the near future but described a “partially electrified Mustang” as a strong possibility. In 2024, he added that hybrid powertrains “work well for performance drivers,” signaling that electrification and excitement can go hand in hand.
A hybrid Mustang could deliver instant electric torque, improved efficiency, and all the raw emotion that defines the iconic pony car. While Ford hasn’t confirmed production plans yet, the idea of combining classic V8 muscle with modern hybrid innovation has fans and enthusiasts eager for what’s next.
If the S650E prototype is any indication, the future of the Mustang looks electric – in more ways than one.
