Ready to drive smarter? Learn how home charging can save you money and make owning an EV easier than ever.

What is Home Charging and How Can It Work for You?

Home charging is the most convenient way to power your Ford EV. With a simple setup, you can charge your vehicle overnight, ensuring it’s ready to go each morning. In single-family homes, you can install a dedicated charging station in your garage or driveway, offering a seamless experience right at home.

Imagine plugging in your car at night and waking up to a fully charged EV each morning. Charging overnight eliminates range anxiety and ensures your car is always topped up, ready for whatever the day brings. No more rushing to find a public charger or worrying about running low on power.

For those in multi-family dwellings, like condos or townhouses, home charging is still an option. Thanks to load sharing devices, you can install a Ford home charger in your own personal parking spot and have it connected to your individual BC Hydro electrical meter. This solution doesn’t require an upgrade to your building’s electrical supply, making it easy to enjoy the convenience of home charging, no matter where you live.

Why Charging at Home Makes Life Easier (and Cheaper!)

Cost Savings

Charging at home is not only convenient, it’s also much more affordable than using DC fast chargers. For instance, BC Hydro’s discounted overnight rate of 9 cents per kWh is a fraction of what you’d pay at a fast charger. In comparison, Chevron’s “On the Run” Level 3 DC fast charger costs 65 cents per kWh—more than seven times higher than BC Hydro’s overnight rate. This significant difference means that charging at home can save you a lot of money over time, especially for longer trips.

For example, driving from New Westminster to Kelowna (375 km) in a Ford F-150 Lightning would cost just $9 to charge overnight at home. In comparison, the gasoline-powered F-150 3.5L EcoBoost would cost $67 in fuel for the same trip. That’s a savings of $58 every time you make the drive—a clear example of how home charging can save you money!

When you break it down, the savings are even more impressive. For the F-150 Lightning, the cost to drive works out to only 2.4 cents per kilometer in electricity. In contrast, the gasoline-powered F-150 3.5L EcoBoost costs 17.8 cents per kilometer for fuel. That’s a difference of 15.4 cents per kilometer, adding up to significant savings over time.

Convenience and Peace of Mind

One of the best parts of home charging is the simplicity and reliability it offers. You never have to worry about finding a charging station or waiting in line. Charging your EV at home is as easy as plugging it in overnight, so it’s fully ready to go by the time you wake up—no planning required.

We’ve all been there—running late for something important and realizing you need to stop for gas because you forgot to fill up yesterday. With home charging, that’s a thing of the past. You start every day with a full charge, ready to go, and never have to adjust your schedule to make a pit stop. While public chargers are there when you need them on longer trips, home charging makes your daily routine that much easier.

Eliminates Range Anxiety

One of the biggest fears for new EV owners is range anxiety—the worry that your car won’t have enough power to get you where you need to go. With home charging, this concern becomes a thing of the past.

Since you charge your vehicle overnight, you’re always waking up to a full battery, ready for the day ahead. You only need enough range to meet your daily needs, whether it’s your commute or running errands. There’s no need to worry about carrying extra battery capacity or planning charging stops during the day. Home charging means you’ll always have the power you need, and you’ll never be caught off guard.

How much does it cost to charge at home? (Based on BC Hydro rates)

Understanding the cost of charging your electric vehicle is essential. Here’s a breakdown of estimated charging costs for Ford’s EV lineup, based on BC Hydro’s Residential Tiered Rate of 9.08 cents per kWh (effective 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM):

Important Notes about BC Hydro charging costs:

These costs are estimates based on charging from a near-empty state to full capacity. Actual costs may vary depending on your driving habits, charging frequency, and other factors.

These calculations assume you are charging during off-peak hours (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM) when BC Hydro’s electricity rate is 9.08 cents per kWh. Charging during peak hours will result in higher costs.

The efficiency of the charger and the vehicle’s onboard charging system can also impact the overall cost. Some energy is always lost in the charging process.

This is just the cost of the electricity itself. It does not include any potential installation fees for your home charging setup.

By taking advantage of off-peak charging hours, you can minimize your electricity costs and enjoy the benefits of driving electric for less.
