Future Ford Vehicles Could Get Inflatable Pet Harness

Ford is working on a way to make driving safer for pets, as revealed in a new patent for an inflatable pet harness.Filed in April 2023 and published in October 2024, this innovation could be used in future Ford vehicles, marking yet another step in the automaker's ongoing effort to enhance pet safety on the road. The inflatable harness would activate in the event of an impact, inflating to provide extra cushioning for pets, much like airbags do for passengers.

The design involves two loops of webbing, an inflatable tether, and a latch plate, which together work to protect pets from injury during a crash. This patent is part of a broader range of ideas Ford has been exploring to keep pets safe, including pet restraint systems and even inflatable enclosures. While traditional static harnesses may not offer sufficient protection in an accident, the inflatable version aims to reduce injury risks significantly.

Ford has been proactive in developing various concepts to safeguard pets, including airbags specifically designed for animals. However, this is the first patent that combines an inflatable system with a pet harness, making it particularly notable. The innovation points to the possibility of pet-specific safety features becoming a reality in future Ford vehicles.

As more people travel with their pets, this technology could be a game-changer for pet owners who frequently hit the road with their furry companions. With Ford’s dedication to making its vehicles safer for all passengers—humans and animals alike—this latest invention is sure to spark interest among pet lovers.
