What Does It Cost to Charge?

Cost to charge? This page will explain how to estimate the cost to charge an EV, and use an analogy comparing the capacity of a battery in kWh to the capacity of a fuel tank in litres, and the price of energy in $-per-kWh to the price of gasoline in $-per-litre.

Descending Bar graph – how many kms for $10 worth of fuel?

Lightning goes farthest.

For one of the FAQ videos, you had an idea idea question being asked is, why are EVs so much cheaper to run?

And the answer is twofold, part of it is a thing you can control, and part of it is a thing that you can’t.

Work out the price per kilowatt when you’re buying energy in the form of gasoline, when you’re buying it in the form of diesel, and when you’re buying it in the form of electricity. An EV costs less to run because the fuel itself costs less. And also talk about the efficiency. A lightning needs 30 kWh to go 100 km. Work out what the energy consumption is in a gas F150 in kilowatt hours so it’s easier to see the difference. Basically, do the opposite of Le (litres equivalent of gas), and flip it the other way.
