Upcoming Ford EV Pickup Will Be Closer in Size to Maverick Than Ranger

Ford’s highly anticipated new EV pickup, set to debut in 2027, is beginning to take shape – and it’s not quite what many expected. While Ford CEO Jim Farley has often referred to it as a “mid-size” pickup, most assumed it would be similar in scale to the Ford Ranger. However, reports from a recent dealer meeting reveal that the prototype is actually closer in size to the compact Ford Maverick.

Despite its smaller stature, Ford emphasized that this new EV pickup will not simply be an electric version of the Maverick. Instead, it will be a unique model built on Ford’s all-new low-cost EV platform. This platform is designed to keep the truck affordable while still delivering on capability, practicality, and driving excitement.

Adding to the intrigue, Ford recently filed a U.S. trademark for the Ranchero name – a historic badge once used on a car-based pickup sold between 1957 and 1979. While it’s not confirmed that the name will return, Ford has a history of reviving classic monikers for modern products, making this possibility especially compelling.

The upcoming pickup is expected to be “super affordable,” thanks to pared-down tech, simplified design, and the use of lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are cheaper to produce and highly durable. Battery production is slated to begin at the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan site in 2026, with assembly likely at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant, targeting up to 190,000 units annually. This smaller, affordable EV truck could mark a turning point in making electric pickups accessible to more drivers.
