Ford is preparing for a major shift in its lineup with the development of a new low-cost EV platform, designed to support a variety of future electric vehicles. The first product on this platform will be a mid-size pickup arriving in 2027, and now reports confirm that a small electric crossover will follow in 2028.

According to Automotive News, the small crossover will be built at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant, one year after the mid-size EV pickup begins production. These new vehicles will serve as replacements for the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair, both of which will be phased out. This marks a significant step forward for Ford as it focuses on affordable EVs to meet evolving customer demands.

To prepare, Ford is retooling the Louisville plant with expanded space, charging equipment, and new technology. The platform itself is expected to support up to eight different body styles, giving Ford flexibility to grow its EV lineup beyond the pickup and crossover. The upcoming pickup is also expected to use lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, with potential production in Michigan, which should help keep costs down while maintaining solid performance.
Ford has also hinted at a major EV announcement scheduled for August 11th in Kentucky. While details remain under wraps, CEO Jim Farley has described it as a “Model T moment” for the company, signaling the importance of this new generation of electric vehicles for Ford’s future.
