Jim Farley Confirms Ford’s Next Electric Pickup Will Be Rear-Wheel Drive

Ford’s next all-electric pickup is beginning to take shape — and it’s already breaking from convention. CEO Jim Farley recently revealed that the upcoming model, set to enter production at the Louisville Assembly Plant in 2027, will feature rear-wheel drive, promising a dynamic driving experience rarely seen in EV trucks.

Speaking on The Verge’s Decoder podcast, Farley described the new vehicle as “a pickup, but really not a pickup,” explaining that it features a new silhouette unlike anything in Ford’s current lineup. “It has more room than a RAV4 — and that doesn’t include its frunk or pickup bed,” Farley said. “It’s very fast, rear-wheel drive, and super fun to drive.”

Early reports suggest that the pickup will be sleek and aerodynamic, featuring a mostly digital interior with a large central screen. Sized closer to the Ford Maverick than the Ford Ranger, it’s designed to be compact and efficient while offering more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. Ford has stated that it will include a frunk and secure pickup bed, giving owners extra storage versatility without needing a roof rack or trailer setup.

Power will reportedly come from a lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, chosen for its cost-effectiveness and long cycle life. The truck will be offered exclusively in four-door configuration and is expected to carry a starting price near $30,000 USD, placing it among the most affordable electric trucks on the market.

Though the name hasn’t been confirmed, recent U.S. trademark filings for “Ranchero” have fueled speculation that Ford might revive the classic badge for this new compact EV. While details like range, charging speeds, and exact release timing remain under wraps, this new model shows Ford’s commitment to offering fun-to-drive, affordable electric vehicles that meet the needs of everyday drivers.

With rear-wheel drive dynamics, practical versatility, and a design focused on efficiency, Ford’s upcoming electric pickup could be the next big leap in EV innovation.
