Ford continues to refine its driver-assist technology, and the latest update – BlueCruise 1.5 – takes hands-free driving to the next level. First introduced on the 2021 Ford F-150 and Mustang Mach-E, BlueCruise has seen rapid adoption. Now, with its newest version, the system adds automatic lane change capability, currently available on the 2025 Mustang Mach-E.
Kevin Wegienka, manager of BlueCruise Core Development, demonstrated the feature using a 2025 Mustang Mach-E. Activating BlueCruise is as simple as pressing the adaptive cruise control button, after which the system monitors traffic, detects slower vehicles, and performs smooth, safe overtakes automatically. This upgrade also allows the vehicle to move out of the passing lane when it detects faster-moving traffic approaching from behind.
To keep drivers in the loop, BlueCruise 1.5 provides both visual and audible alerts before making lane changes. Ford says the system can automate up to 45 percent of lane change maneuvers. For those who prefer manual control, drivers can override the feature by tapping the turn signal, holding the steering wheel, or disabling automatic lane change in the Driver Assistance menu.
This advancement is made possible by new ADAS sensors, upgraded cameras, and a more powerful processing unit – technology not available on earlier BlueCruise-capable models. The good news is that these improvements, currently exclusive to the 2025 Mustang Mach-E, are expected to expand across other Ford models in the near future, enhancing safety and convenience for even more drivers.
