Ford continues to push the boundaries of off-road technology, filing a new patent for an automatic Trail Turn Assist feature that could be implemented in future vehicles. The patent, originally filed in August 2023 and published in February 2025, envisions a system that would automatically engage Trail Turn Assist based on road conditions, steering angle, and vehicle speed—eliminating the need for drivers to manually activate it.
Trail Turn Assist, first introduced in the 2021 Ford Bronco and later added to the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ford Ranger, is designed to reduce a vehicle’s turning radius by applying the brake to the inside rear wheel during sharp, low-speed maneuvers. This feature is particularly useful when navigating tight trails or off-road obstacles. The proposed automatic version of this system could take the guesswork out of engaging Trail Turn Assist, making it even more convenient for drivers exploring rugged terrain.
Ford has a history of innovating off-road driving technology, with other recent patent filings including a reverse drive and dig mode, as well as predictive regenerative braking. While patent applications don’t always guarantee future production, they do highlight the automaker’s commitment to improving the off-road experience. In a statement, Ford emphasized that its patents serve as a way to protect new ideas, but the company will always prioritize customer needs when deciding which features to bring to market.
If this new automatic Trail Turn Assist comes to life, it could significantly enhance off-road capability across Ford’s lineup, offering greater ease and control for adventure seekers. Could we see this feature in future models of the Bronco, Raptor, or Ranger? Time will tell, but Ford enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to as the brand continues to innovate.
