Ford Files Patent For Bed To Cab Pass Through Feature For Future EV Pickups

Ford Motor Company has filed a new patent describing a bed to cab pass through feature that could be used in future Ford electric pickup trucks. While this type of functionality has appeared on pickups from other automakers over the years, no Ford model currently offers it. That could change as the company continues developing its next generation of electric trucks.

The patent was filed on April 24th, 2023, published on October 30th, 2025, and assigned serial number 0333118.

Bed to cab pass through designs allow pickup owners to extend the usable length of the truck bed into the cabin, making it easier to haul long items without leaving the tailgate open or relying on external racks. Ford has explored similar ideas in prior patent filings, and this latest version appears especially well suited for electric pickups with skateboard-style platforms.

According to the patent, the system would use a specially designed cab back assembly that normally separates the passenger compartment from the truck bed. When needed, that panel could fold inward, opening a pass through between the bed and the interior. This would allow longer cargo to extend forward into the cabin while still being supported and secured.

The design also includes the ability for the bed floor to extend beyond the tailgate, creating even more usable length when hauling items such as lumber, pipes, kayaks, or other long gear. This could be particularly appealing for owners of pickups with shorter beds who still need the flexibility to carry oversized cargo from time to time.

As Ford continues development of a new mid-size electric pickup expected to launch later this decade, this type of feature could offer a practical solution for maximizing cargo space without increasing overall vehicle size. That said, as with all patent filings, there is no guarantee that this system will make it to production.

“Submitting patent applications is a normal part of any strong business as the process protects new ideas and helps us build a robust portfolio of intellectual property,” Ford said in a statement. “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans. No matter what the patent application outlines, we will always put the customer first in the decision-making behind the development and marketing of new products and services.”
