Ford Explorer Ranks Among the Least Stolen Vehicles in America

While vehicle theft has been on the rise across the U.S., not every model is a top target for thieves. New data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) shows that the Ford Explorer is one of the least stolen vehicles from the 2022–2024 model years, making it a standout in terms of ownership security.

The IIHS report found that the Explorer had a relative claim frequency of just 10, far below the average score of 100. To put that into perspective, the most stolen vehicle on the list – the Chevy Camaro ZL1 – posted a staggering claim frequency of 3,949. While muscle cars and pickup trucks dominate the most-stolen category, the Explorer remains one of the safer bets for owners concerned about theft.

Interestingly, the Ford Explorer joins a small group of traditional gas-powered vehicles on the least-stolen list, which also includes several EVs and plug-in hybrids like the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Experts suggest that EVs and PHEVs are less attractive to thieves because they’re more likely to be parked in garages or close to buildings to facilitate charging.

It’s not entirely clear why the Explorer has such a low theft rate despite its popularity, but it’s welcome news for SUV shoppers. As the IIHS notes, features like electronic immobilizers can play a major role in reducing theft claims, as evidenced by Hyundai and Kia models that saw theft rates drop dramatically after adding the technology. Regardless of the exact reason, Explorer owners can take comfort in knowing their SUV is one of the least stolen vehicles on the road today.
