Drive with Confidence: Study Shows EVs Significantly More Reliable Than Gas Cars!

New research from Germany’s esteemed ADAC (Automobile Club) delivers encouraging news for electric vehicle (EV) owners and those considering making the switch: EVs are significantly less likely to break down compared to their gasoline and diesel counterparts. This study, analyzing roadside assistance calls per 1,000 vehicles, reveals a clear trend favoring the reliability of electric powertrains. The data offers compelling evidence that EVs are not only a greener choice but also a potentially more dependable one.

The ADAC’s findings show that, on average, EVs built between 2020 and 2022 experienced a breakdown rate of just 4.2 per 1,000 vehicles. In stark contrast, combustion engine cars had a considerably higher breakdown rate of 10.4 per 1,000 vehicles during the same period. This substantial difference highlights the inherent advantages of EVs with their fewer moving parts and simpler mechanical systems. Interestingly, the study also indicates a positive trend for both types of vehicles, with breakdown rates steadily decreasing over the years.

Perhaps the most reassuring finding for EV owners is that the primary cause of breakdowns in both EVs and combustion engine cars is the 12-volt battery. This component is essentially the same in both types of vehicles, meaning that concerns about major, expensive failures in the high-voltage battery of an EV are largely unfounded based on this data. While there were some outliers in the study, the overall trend showcases the increasing reliability and robustness of electric vehicles as manufacturers refine their technology.

Overall, the ADAC’s report suggests that many of the initial teething issues associated with early EVs have been successfully addressed by manufacturers. The increasing diversity and general sturdiness of electric vehicles on the market are contributing to a lower overall breakdown rate. This study provides valuable insights for consumers, indicating that choosing an EV can lead to not only a more sustainable driving experience but also a more reliable one, offering greater peace of mind on the road.
