A recent survey by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) reveals a strong preference for electric vehicles among Canadian drivers. Nearly 90% of current EV owners expressed a high likelihood of purchasing another electric vehicle in the future, with only a small percentage considering a return to gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles. This positive outlook is further solidified by the fact that nearly half of all Canadians are considering an EV purchase within the next year.
While satisfaction with their electric vehicles is high, the survey highlighted a significant concern: the availability of public charging infrastructure. A concerning 35% of Canadian EV drivers reported dissatisfaction with the number of public chargers available, with this figure rising to 68% in Atlantic Canada. This disparity is particularly acute for residents of multi-unit dwellings, who rely more heavily on public charging stations due to limited home charging options.
Despite these infrastructure challenges, the benefits of EV ownership are evident. 91% of BEV owners reported significantly lower fueling costs compared to gasoline vehicles, and 79% experienced lower maintenance costs. PHEV owners also reported significant cost savings, although to a lesser degree.
Looking ahead, the survey findings indicate a promising future for electric transportation in Canada. With strong consumer demand and a growing awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of EVs, the industry must prioritize the expansion of public charging infrastructure to support this transition.
