Posted on January 3, 2025
The Ford F-150 Lightning has solidified its place as a leader in the electric pickup truck market, taking on rivals like the Chevy Silverado EV in head-to-head comparisons. In a recent real-world test conducted by Edmunds, the F-150 Lightning came out on top, overcoming challenges in areas like driving range and delivering a better overall experience for drivers and passengers alike.
While the Chevy Silverado EV boasts an impressive range advantage—achieving 484 miles in Edmunds’ test compared to the Lightning’s 324 miles—its massive 205 kWh battery negatively impacts driving dynamics. According to Edmunds, the Silverado EV feels "ponderous, harsh, and skittish," making it less enjoyable to drive compared to the more balanced and refined F-150 Lightning. This driving experience, combined with other key factors, gave the Ford truck a noticeable edge.
The interior quality of the two trucks further tipped the scales in favor of the F-150 Lightning. While the Silverado EV was criticized for its cheap-looking and feeling cabin, the Lightning offered a more premium and functional interior. Additionally, the Lightning outperformed in payload capacity, supporting up to 2,000 pounds compared to the Silverado’s 1,500 pounds. Although the Chevy gained points for its bed space and tailgate utility, both trucks tied with a towing capacity of 10,000 pounds.
Pricing was another deciding factor in Edmunds' conclusion. The F-150 Lightning starts at approximately $65,000 USD, significantly less than the Silverado EV's $75,000 USD starting price. In this test, the as-tested prices were $80,000 USD for the Lightning and $96,000 USD for the Silverado—a substantial $16,000 USD gap. Ultimately, Edmunds declared the Ford F-150 Lightning the winner of this comparison, noting its superior driving experience, better interior, and more competitive pricing as key advantages.
