Ford Patent Suggests Innovative Interior Feature Could Be Coming to U.S. Vehicles
Posted on January 20, 2025
Ford Motor Company recently filed a patent for an interior vehicle module that could make its way to future U.S. models. The feature, reminiscent of the "Sync Move" technology found in the European Ford Explorer EV, involves a movable touchscreen display that doubles as a secure compartment. This innovation was initially showcased in the European Explorer EV, which debuted in March 2023, offering a 15-inch touchscreen that slides up and down to reveal a hidden "private locker" for valuables.
The patent, filed in November 2022 and published in November 2024, details a similar concept for adjustable vehicle display modules. These screens could tilt, rotate, or move to optimize visibility and reduce glare while also revealing hidden storage spaces. While Ford’s patent doesn’t explicitly mention the Explorer EV, the concept aligns closely with the moving screen technology seen in that model.
Bringing such a feature to U.S. vehicles would be part of Ford’s broader strategy to enhance practicality and security for drivers. Moving screens have become increasingly popular in new vehicles, allowing drivers to customize their infotainment displays while incorporating innovative uses like concealed compartments. If implemented, this feature could enhance convenience for Ford owners and bring a touch of European ingenuity stateside.
Notably, this isn’t the first time Ford has explored adapting features from its global lineup for the U.S. market. The Blue Oval recently patented concepts similar to elements found in the European Transit Custom, such as a built-in tray system. This trend demonstrates Ford’s commitment to leveraging its global innovations to elevate its vehicles’ functionality and appeal in key markets.
