Why Only 1% of EV Drivers Return to Gas-Powered Cars

A recent survey conducted by the Global EV Alliance reveals a compelling trend: once drivers switch to electric vehicles (EVs), they are extremely unlikely to return to gas-powered cars. The study, which gathered responses from over 23,000 EV owners across 18 countries, found that 92% of respondents plan to buy another electric vehicle, while only 1% expressed interest in going back to an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. This statistic highlights the growing commitment to EVs among drivers who have already made the switch.
The primary reason for this shift is the significant reduction in operating costs. Nearly half (45%) of survey participants cited lower operational expenses as their top motivation for choosing an EV. Other key factors influencing the decision include the climate benefits of driving electric (40%), the positive environmental impact (32%), and the smoother, quieter driving experience EVs offer (21%). With reduced maintenance costs (18%) and the absence of the need for frequent fuel stops, EVs present clear advantages over traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
Many EV drivers also appreciate the economic incentives that make switching to electric vehicles more affordable. In addition to the savings on fuel and maintenance, the availability of tax credits, such as the $7,500 USD federal incentive in the U.S., has made EVs more accessible. Lower battery prices are also driving the cost of EVs down, making them competitive with, or even more affordable than, gas-powered counterparts. As a result, more drivers are attracted to the idea of owning an electric vehicle without breaking the bank.
The trend is not only growing in established markets like the U.S. and Canada, where EV sales are steadily increasing, but also in regions like China, which continues to dominate global electric vehicle sales. As more EV models, including affordable entry-level cars and advanced luxury vehicles, become available, it’s clear that electric cars are poised to continue taking market share from traditional gas-powered vehicles. With ongoing advancements in battery technology and overall vehicle efficiency, the future of electric driving looks brighter than ever.
