Why Ford Put An F-150 Lightning Motor In The New 2024 Mustang Mach-E
Posted on September 24, 2024
Ford’s decision to equip the 2024 Mustang Mach-E with the F-150 Lightning’s rear motor enhances its performance, specifically in acceleration and quarter-mile times. The new in-house motor design delivers 700 pound-feet of torque in its upgraded version, allowing the Mach-E to achieve a 0-60 mph time of just 3.3 seconds. This change addresses customer concerns about drag-strip performance.
The new motor features a unique winding design, offering more thermal capacity, which allows the Mach-E to run at high outputs for longer periods. This design improvement ensures that the vehicle can handle more current flow, leading to better torque performance while maintaining efficiency. Moreover, the motor’s architecture also leaves room for potential upgrades, such as transitioning to an 800-volt system.
Aside from performance, Ford benefits from cost savings by sharing the F-150 Lightning motor across models. Despite challenges in fitting the larger motor into the Mach-E's subframe, the upgrade brings tangible benefits for both Ford and its customers, positioning the Mach-E as a more competitive EV in terms of both power and efficiency.
