Merkur Parts Retailer Still Going Strong After 40 Years

For a brief period from 1985 to 1989, the Merkur brand served as Ford Motor Company's foray into the European luxury car market in North America. Rather than developing new vehicles under the Merkur name, Ford opted to adapt existing European models, namely the XR4Ti and Scorpio, for U.S. consumers. These adaptations included modifications to meet American safety regulations, but despite these efforts, Merkur struggled to make a lasting impact and eventually faded from the automotive landscape. However, a few Merkur models still roam the roads today, thanks in part to dedicated parts retailers like the Rapido Group.
Based in Tygh Valley, Oregon, Rapido Group has been a lifeline for Merkur enthusiasts for over 40 years. Recently, the company made headlines when it listed a 1.66-acre parcel of land for sale at $150,000, although the numerous Merkur models parked on the property are not included in this sale. Remarkably, the Rapido Group continues to thrive despite there being only around 1,500 Merkur vehicles still registered in the United States. This longevity speaks to the dedicated community surrounding these vehicles and the importance of specialized parts suppliers in keeping them on the road.
Currently, Rapido boasts around 97 Merkur models, including 45 Scorpios—two of which feature the rare five-speed manual transmission—and over 50 XR4Tis, some of which lack a sunroof. Many of these cars have been in storage for anywhere from five to 20 years and are noted to be rust-free, although they will require some level of refurbishment. For enthusiasts looking to restore a piece of automotive history, these models could present a golden opportunity, especially given that they were "running when parked."
Despite the land sale, Rapido has no plans to alter its business model or cease operations, much to the relief of Merkur fans everywhere. This commitment to preserving and providing parts for these unique vehicles ensures that the legacy of the Merkur brand will continue, albeit in a niche capacity. Whether you’re a long-time Merkur owner or simply someone intrigued by these distinctive vehicles, Rapido Group remains an invaluable resource for parts and restoration, keeping the spirit of Merkur alive for generations to come.
