Ford Ranger's 2.7L V6 EcoBoost Impresses with Power and Refinement

The next-generation 2024 Ford Ranger has arrived with notable upgrades, including the long-awaited 2.7L V6 EcoBoost engine. Initially announced as a late-availability option, this twin-turbocharged powerhouse is now available and has garnered significant praise from reviewers. Combining robust performance with refined handling, this engine option further elevates the Ranger’s appeal for midsize truck enthusiasts.

Wards Auto’s Bob Gritzinger highlights the engine’s impressive output of 315 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, noting its “smooth, powerful response without any theatrics.” Available for an additional $2,195 USD over the standard 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost engine, the V6 proves to be a worthy upgrade for those seeking enhanced power and versatility. Gritzinger also observed fuel efficiency of 21 mpg during mixed city and highway driving, slightly outperforming the EPA estimate of 20 mpg.

Car & Driver’s Austin Irwin was equally impressed, comparing the V6-powered Ranger’s performance to the more aggressive Ranger Raptor, which features a 3.0L V6 EcoBoost engine. The new V6 allows the Ranger to hit 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, only marginally slower than the Raptor’s 5.3-second sprint. While highway fuel economy lagged slightly behind EPA estimates, Irwin praised the engine as “a meaningful upgrade,” especially for those utilizing the Ranger’s 7,500-pound towing capacity and 1,711-pound payload capability.

Lucas Bell of Road & Track summed up the sentiment by calling the V6 engine the “sweet spot” in the 2024 Ranger lineup. He commended its ability to deliver “more performance and a markedly more premium feel,” making it an appealing choice for those who prioritize both power and refinement. With this engine, Bell concluded, “the Ranger has never been better,” solidifying the V6 EcoBoost as a standout addition to Ford’s midsize truck offerings.
