Ford Philanthropy Breaks Ground On Community Center Near EV Plant

Ford is making significant strides in its commitment to sustainable electric vehicle (EV) production and community development with its new facility, BlueOval City, in Stanton, Tennessee. This groundbreaking site will not only be home to a state-of-the-art electric vehicle manufacturing plant but also features a battery plant operated by BlueOval SK, a joint venture with South Korean battery maker SK On. While trial operations are already underway, Ford’s philanthropic efforts are also taking shape with the recent announcement of the Ford Community Center, which aims to serve the local communities surrounding BlueOval City.
The Ford Community Center will be established in the historic Stanton School, which was built in 1948 to educate African American students before desegregation. Ford Philanthropy has taken the initiative to restore this vital community space, transforming it into a resource hub for residents of Stanton, Brownsville, Covington, and Somerville. After hosting 2,500 hours of listening sessions with local residents, Ford aims to ensure that the center addresses critical community needs, making it a "front door" for services that are currently lacking. The renovation will include modern updates, such as broadband access, and will serve as a collaborative space for nonprofits, community members, and local leaders.
Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter expressed optimism about the Ford Community Center, highlighting its potential to benefit the region for generations. The center will focus on essential services, including economic mobility, food security, and entrepreneurship, in partnership with organizations like the United Way of West Tennessee. This collaborative approach aims to foster community resilience and ensure that all residents can thrive alongside the growth of BlueOval City.
While there are concerns among local residents about the potential for gentrification linked to the rapid development in the area, many view BlueOval City as a project with the power to uplift the community. Interestingly, despite the postponement of vehicle production until 2027, Stanton Mayor Allan Sterbinsky sees this delay as an opportunity to address necessary infrastructure updates. With the Ford Community Center and BlueOval City, Ford is not only investing in EV technology but also actively working to create a positive impact on the local community.
