Ford Mustang Mach-E Outsells Gas Mustang for the First Time in 2024

When Ford introduced the all-electric Mustang Mach-E for the 2021 model year, it sparked controversy among Mustang purists. Many questioned whether an electric SUV deserved the legendary pony car badge. However, fast forward to 2024, and the Mustang Mach-E has achieved a significant milestone—outselling the traditional gasoline-powered Ford Mustang for the first time ever.
According to Ford’s December sales report, the company sold 51,745 Mustang Mach-E units in 2024, compared to 44,003 units of the classic Mustang coupe. This marks a notable sales gap of 7,742 vehicles. The Mach-E also saw an impressive 26.92% increase in sales year-over-year, while the gasoline Mustang experienced a 9.47% decline compared to 2023. Several factors likely contributed to this shift, including the rising costs of the redesigned S650 Mustang, which debuted at a higher price point and has continued to increase, while the Mach-E benefited from strong incentives and a growing consumer interest in EVs.
In 2023, the traditional Mustang still maintained a lead, selling 48,605 units compared to the Mach-E’s 40,771 sales. However, with EV adoption on the rise and Ford’s commitment to electrification, the momentum has clearly shifted. The Mach-E’s blend of performance, technology, and SUV practicality has won over a broad audience, while the conventional Mustang faces declining demand in a changing automotive landscape.
Despite the Mach-E’s success, Ford remains committed to keeping the traditional Mustang a gasoline-powered sports car. CEO Jim Farley has previously stated that an all-electric Mustang coupe is not in the company’s plans. For now, the Mustang legacy continues in two distinct forms—one carrying on the combustion-engine tradition, and the other pushing the brand into the electrified future.
