Ford Files Another Patent For Under Hood Airbag
Posted on January 7, 2025
Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an innovative underhood airbag system designed to improve pedestrian safety. This patent, filed in May 2023 and published in November 2024, details an airbag positioned under the vehicle’s hood, which would deploy in the event of a front-end collision. The airbag is strategically mounted at the rear of the hood and inflates toward the front, cushioning the impact for pedestrians who may be struck by the vehicle.
Ford has filed numerous airbag patents in recent years, many of which are specifically aimed at protecting pedestrians in the event of an accident. These include airbags positioned in various areas around the vehicle, such as the bumper and across the front end, with the same purpose of reducing injury to individuals outside the car. This new underhood airbag system is the latest example of Ford's ongoing commitment to improving safety technology for all road users.
This patent responds to a growing concern over pedestrian injuries, especially given the rise in accidents involving larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs. These vehicles often have higher hoods and more limited frontal visibility, which can make it challenging for drivers to see pedestrians directly in front of them. Safety organizations have emphasized the need for better frontal impact protection, and Ford’s underhood airbag concept may be a step toward addressing this issue.
As pedestrian safety becomes an increasing priority, technology like Ford’s underhood airbag system may soon become a standard feature in new vehicles, particularly large SUVs and trucks. Ford's proactive approach in developing safety innovations underscores its commitment to leading the way in vehicle safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
