Ford Expanding Lineup with Extended-Range EV Variants

Ford is set to introduce extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants of several models in its lineup, including the Super Duty, according to a new report. EREVs combine a large battery pack with a traditional gas engine that functions as a generator, helping to recharge the battery while also providing greater range for long-distance travel. Ford CEO Jim Farley has previously stated that he sees EREVs as a key part of the transition to electrification, and it now appears that the automaker is moving forward with plans to bring these models to market.
A Bloomberg report suggests that Farley was particularly impressed by the EREV technology he encountered during a recent trip to China. Citing a source familiar with Ford’s plans, the report claims that the company is preparing to launch EREV versions of some of its most popular and profitable vehicles, including SUVs, crossovers, and the Super Duty lineup. However, these models are not expected to arrive before 2027.
This move aligns with Ford’s broader electrification strategy. The automaker previously filed a patent for an extended-range EV concept in November 2023, signaling its interest in this technology. Additionally, Ford has committed to adding hybrid variants to its entire ICE-focused Ford Blue lineup by 2030 or earlier, with electrified versions of the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator replacing previously planned all-electric models.
While the Ford Super Duty technically falls under the commercial-focused Ford Pro division rather than Ford Blue, an electrified version of the heavy-duty truck has been rumored for some time. In July 2023, Ford announced that the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada would begin production of the next-generation Super Duty in 2026, with plans to introduce an electrified variant later in the decade. As Ford continues investing in hybrid and extended-range EVs, its future lineup is shaping up to provide customers with more options that balance power, efficiency, and range.
