Ford CEO Jim Farley Sees Small Pickups and SUVs as the Future of EVs

Ford is making a major shift in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, focusing on smaller, more affordable models instead of larger, high-priced EVs. This decision comes after years of research and development into a low-cost EV platform that will serve as the foundation for Ford’s next-generation electric models. Among these, a mid-size pickup and a possible crossover or rideshare vehicle are expected to lead the charge. According to Ford CEO Jim Farley, these types of vehicles represent the “sweet spot” for EV adoption.

During Ford’s Q4 2024 earnings call, Farley explained that small and medium-sized trucks and SUVs are ideal candidates for electrification. Their daily commuter role, suitability as second vehicles, and ability to use smaller, more affordable batteries make them an excellent choice for consumers looking for lower operating costs. By prioritizing these segments, Ford aims to deliver high-volume, cost-effective EVs that will accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across a wider customer base.

This strategic shift marks a departure from Ford’s previous EV plans, which initially focused on larger and more expensive models. The automaker recently canceled two planned three-row all-electric crossovers, instead opting to develop new hybrid alternatives in the same category. This move reflects Ford’s recognition that the market currently favors more accessible EV options rather than luxury, high-priced electric models.

Additionally, Ford has decided to delay production of the next-generation all-electric Ford F-150, originally planned for this year, to 2027 at the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center at BlueOval City. This delay aligns with Ford’s broader strategy of prioritizing practical, affordable EVs that meet consumer demand. As the industry evolves, it’s clear that Ford is doubling down on small pickups and SUVs as the future of electric mobility.
