Ford BlueCruise 1.5 Announced With Automatic Lane Changes
Posted on November 28, 2024
Ford continues to innovate and enhance its BlueCruise hands-free highway driving assist feature, with recent updates showcasing its commitment to improving the user experience. The latest version, BlueCruise 1.5, debuted just weeks after the previous update, BlueCruise 1.4, which saw a price reduction and the introduction of a one-time purchasing option. This rapid evolution highlights Ford’s focus on expanding BlueCruise’s capabilities and making it more accessible for drivers.
One of the most significant enhancements in BlueCruise 1.5 is the addition of the Automatic Lane Change feature. This functionality allows the vehicle to autonomously change lanes as it approaches slower-moving traffic, enabling users to enjoy hands-free driving for more extended periods, even in congested conditions. Developed by the Ford Advanced Driver Assistance (ADAS) team, Automatic Lane Change is designed to enhance safety by avoiding merges into fast-moving traffic and steering clear of right-hand lanes with off-ramps or inconsistent markings. This thoughtful design empowers drivers to feel more confident while using the feature.
Ford’s internal testing indicates that BlueCruise 1.5 can automate up to 45 percent of lane changes, significantly enhancing the driving experience. The system detects clear adjacent lanes and ensures enough time for a smooth transition before notifying the driver with visual and audio prompts. These alerts inform the driver about the impending lane change and the rationale behind it, such as passing slow-moving vehicles or safely moving out of the passing lane once the maneuver is complete.
For those who prefer manual control, BlueCruise provides options to disable the Automatic Lane Change feature. Drivers can easily tap the turn signal in the opposite direction or grip the steering wheel to override the system. The 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E will be the first model to feature BlueCruise 1.5, with plans for future models to adopt this innovative technology. While Ford hasn’t provided a specific timeline for broader rollout, the enhancements to BlueCruise reflect the brand's commitment to making hands-free driving safer and more convenient for all users.
