2024 was a record-breaking year for BC Hydro's EV network, thanks to the support of electric vehicle drivers across British Columbia. This milestone year marked the completion of the province’s Electric Highway and significant advancements in infrastructure, making EV travel more convenient and accessible than ever before.
B.C.’s Electric Highway: A Major Achievement
The highlight of 2024 was the completion of B.C.’s Electric Highway—a network of 155 charging sites ensuring drivers are never more than 150 kilometers away from a charger along highways and major roadways. BC Hydro played a pivotal role by building 111 of these sites, solidifying the province’s commitment to supporting EV adoption and sustainable travel.
Expanded Charging Network and New Features
BC Hydro’s charging network saw a dramatic expansion in 2024, with 244 new charging ports added across the province. This brought the total to 406 ports at 132 sites. New features included energy-based (kWh) charging rates and idle fees, offering users transparent and fair pricing. Tesla drivers also benefited from the addition of NACS connectors at select locations, with plans for further expansion.
Faster and More Reliable Charging
Ultra-fast charging options took center stage in 2024, with 350 kW chargers introduced at key locations like Lake Country and Prince George. Nearly 50% of BC Hydro’s charging ports now deliver 175 kW or more, ensuring quicker and more efficient stops for EV drivers. These enhancements, combined with an impressive 9.1 PlugShare rating and a growing community of over 100,000 active drivers, underscore BC Hydro’s dedication to improving the EV experience in B.C.
As BC Hydro continues to grow its network, its achievements in 2024 set the stage for an even more connected and sustainable future for electric vehicle travel across the province.
