2021 Ford Explorer XLT
The Explorer XLT may be the entry-level model of the range, but there's nothing basic about its features. The powertrain is built around a 2.3L EcoBoost turbo I-4 engine which makes 300 horsepower and 310lb-ft of torque, fed through a ten-speed automatic transmission to intelligent all-wheel drive.
Infotainment is handled by an 8" touchscreen display equipped with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot facility, while voice-activated navigation is available as an option. Impressively for an entry-level model, there's also a 6.5" LCD instrument gauge cluster nestled behind the steering wheel.
And lastly for this trim, there's an extensive suite of active driver assist systems with highlights including blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assistance, cross-traffic alerts, automatic emergency brake assist, and adaptive cruise control.
2021 Ford Explorer Buying Options
2021 Ford Explorer Timberline
The Timberline takes the XLT's powerful engine and moves it firmly into off-road territory with a host of upgraded engineering items. Higher ground clearance and steel underbody skid plates carry the Explorer over challenging terrains without breaking sweat, while the addition of paddle shifting capability to the transmission makes for a highly controlled drive. Finally, the interior offers high-end features including a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, plus ActiveX seating with heathered cloth inserts and tangerine stitching.
2021 Ford Explorer Limited
The Limited trim is available with either the 2.3L turbo engine from the XLT, or a more powerful 3.3L V6 gas / electric hybrid engine pushing out 318 horsepower and 322lb-ft. Again, a ten-speed automatic transmission is used to feed all-wheel drive. Extra interior features include HD radio as standard, plus heated rear seats and cooled front seats.
2021 Ford Explorer ST
The ST trim takes on a significant power upgrade with its 3.0L twin-turbo V6 engine making a mammoth 400 horsepower and 415lb-ft, pushing the Explorer up the performance rankings with a top speed of 230kmh. And to add to the extra punch under the hood, the driver assist system is upgraded to provide an autonomous parking aid, while interior comfort is boosted with a luxurious seat massage feature.
2021 Ford Explorer Platinum
The Platinum is the top-level Explorer in the 2021 range, and features the full set of upgrades and enhancements including a huge 10.1" infotainment touchscreen, an expanded 12.3" digital gauge cluster, voice-activated navigation as standard, and a premium Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker audio system.
