The Ford Mustang: How Many Generations Are There?

(Posted on Jul 25, 2016 at 01:04PM by Michelle Bogle)
Few car models – if any at all – have survived 50+ years of continual production like the Ford Mustang. Initially unveiled in 1964, this iconic pony car has been an ongoing symbol of automotive design and ingenuity, spawning six impressive generations of the vehicle.
Let’s take a closer look at the Mustang’s pedigree:
First Generation (1964 ½ - 1973)
In March 1964, the first Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan. One month later, it was introduced to the public at the World’s Fair in New York. Before the day was over, Ford had secured 22,000+ orders for the vehicle, proving that the pony car was an instant hit with consumers.
Second Generation (1974-1978)
One full decade after the launch of the all-new Mustang, Ford took a different approach with the second generation. Smaller in size and equipped with a trimmed down engine, the Mustang II was more fuel efficient, compact and appealing to muscle car enthusiasts looking for greater value.
Third Generation (1979-1993)
Sleek and redesigned, the 1979 model year Mustang was the first to be built on the new Fox Platform. Longer and taller than the Mustang II, the third generation was 200 lbs. lighter and featured an all-new European-inspired design – it was quite the departure for the Ford Mustang.
Fourth Generation (1994-2004)
1994 marked the 30th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, as well as the fourth generation of the pony car. Built on the all-new SN-95/Fox4 Platform, the Mustang not only looked different, but it drove differently too with its stiffer engineering and all-new design.
Fifth Generation (2005-2014)
In 2005, Ford introduced the D2C Mustang Platform as part of its fifth generation. This new platform was designed to make the pony car faster, safer, more agile and better-looking than ever before – and it certainly did! This generation also returned the Mustang to its classic styling cues that made it so popular to begin with.
Sixth Generation (2015-Present)
In December 2013, Ford officially revealed the all-new 2015 Mustang, which was completely redesigned to honour its 50 years of heritage. This model marked its sixth generation, which is still available today. It offers drivers supreme styling, power and performance with the choice of three engine variants, including a fuel-efficient EcoBoost option.
Here’s a quick look at the Ford Mustang over the last 50 years:
Throughout its six generations, more than 9.2 million Mustangs have been produced and sold across the globe, providing muscle car enthusiasts with adrenaline-pumping driving enjoyment.
