That's why, in today's post, we're here to extinguish some common used car buying myths so that you can approach your next vehicle purchase with peace of mind.
 
Myth #1: Used cars aren’t reliable
False – these days, automakers build their vehicles to last. With innovative engine technologies, advances in machinery and cutting-edge automotive design, cars can last well past the 200,000 to 300,000 km mark.
 
Myth #2: There’s no way to protect yourself from buying a lemon
False – there’s actually a few ways that you can protect yourself:
 
1. Buy Certified Preowned (CPO) – These vehicles must meet certain criteria before their qualified as being CPO. The dealership must inspect them, refurbish them and cover them with some type of after manufacturer warranty. 
 
2. Request a Vehicle History Report – By searching your vehicle’s VIN number, you can see if it’s ever been in an accident before and how serious the collision was.
 
3. Buy Extended Warranty Coverage – These plans can cover your car for additional kilometres outside of the original manufacturer’s warranty.
 
Myth #3: Used cars aren’t fuel efficient
False – overall vehicle age plays a very small role in its fuel efficiency. What matters is the condition of the vehicle and its engine size. For instance, if you buy a vehicle with a 2.4L engine, you can expect a relatively good fuel efficiency when compared to a bigger V6 engine. Same goes for a well-maintained engine opposed to a neglected one. 
 
Myth #4: Used cars offer little resale value
False – when a vehicle is properly maintained, it can hold its value come resale or trade-in time. What matters is its safety, reliability, fuel economy, appearance and interior space – five key things that used car shoppers are looking for. If your car checks off these boxes, you can expect to fetch a decent resale value when the time comes.
