When you are shopping for a preowned car, truck or SUV, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the abundance of options and features to choose from. Because let’s face it – each year, new automotive technologies are unveiled, offering the latest in convenience, infotainment and vehicle safety systems.
With so much choice, it can be hard to know which features are actually useful and which ones are overkill.
Thankfully for us, Consumer Reports has done a great deal of research on this topic, which they have compiled into a list of the top 18 must-have features that every driver should consider when purchasing a vehicle:
1. Comfortable seats
2. Power driver’s seat with height-adjustable lumbar support
3. Forward collision warning
4. Automatic emergency braking
5. Backup camera
6. Rear cross-traffic alert
7. Blind-spot monitoring
8. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
9. Bluetooth connectivity
10. 360-degree surround-view camera systems
11. Head-up displays
12. USB port
13. Voice controls
14. Heated seats and steering wheel
15. Dual-zone automatic climate control
16. Automatic high beams
17. Spare tire
18. Keyless entry
Seems like a fairly comprehensive list, right? We think so!
In terms of features that you can skip, Consumer Reports suggests that gesture/character recognition, DVD players, built-in nav, apps, wi-fi and lane-keeping systems are nice to have, but not necessary. In most cases, these types of features can add to the complexity and cost of a vehicle – and, when you are buying used, it’s nice to be budget-conscious.
So, let’s turn it over to you. What types of features are on your must-have list? Are they more comfort related, like heated seats and steering wheels, or convenience-focused, like keyless entry and voice controls?
