Winter Car Care Tips from Your Ford Service Experts

(Posted on Nov 21, 2016 at 10:00PM by Michelle Bogle)
winter car care vancouver bcWinter is on its way! And, to get you prepared for the upcoming season, we’ve rounded up eight simple car care tips that will help you keep your vehicle looking and driving its best all winter long:

1. Install proper tires
While we may not get buried in snow each winter, we do deal with our fair share of precipitation in New Westminster, B.C. And, as the temperature drops, that can lead to poor traction and control on the roads, especially below 7 degrees Celsius. This is also the temperature where winter tires really kick into performance, thanks to the special rubber compounds that are designed to improve surface grip in every type of road condition, including ice and snow. If you think you might benefit from installing winter tires on your Ford car or truck, our Service Advisors can help you select the best set to suit your driving habits and budget.

2. Inspect your battery
It’s a fact: colder temperatures will drain your car’s battery far more quickly. To help prevent an unnecessary breakdown, be sure to inspect that your battery is in good shape and watch out for signs of corrosion. If your battery is more than three years old, your headlights are dim or you hear a clicking or grinding sound when your car starts, it’s time for a replacement.

3. Align your headlamps
Thanks to Daylight Savings, the days are shorter and the nights are longer. To ensure your safety while driving in the dark, you’ll want to ensure that your headlights are properly aligned so that you can see clearly in all road conditions.

4. Check and change your oil
Oil thickens in cold temperatures, making it more difficult for it to circulate through your engine, which can lead to a failure. To help ensure that you don’t get stuck, it’s important to check and change your oil regularly and use an oil designed for colder weather.

5. Fill your coolant
Coolant not only stops your engine from overheating in the summer, but it also keeps your engine’s fluid from freezing in the colder weather. Prior to the start of winter, be sure to check your coolant level and fill it up as needed.

6. Make sure your heater is working
This is an obvious winter car care tip, but one that drivers often overlook. Don’t be left out in the cold – make sure to inspect your heater now so that it works properly on those chilly mornings.

7. Replace your wiper blades
When was the last time you replaced your wiper blades? If it was over six months to a year ago, it’s time for a new pair. And, while you are at it, be sure to top up your windshield washer fluid using a liquid with a suitable freeze protection level.

8. Fill up regularly
In cold temperatures, it is advised that you keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid your gas line from freezing due to the condensation in your tank. And, before you drive away from the gas station, swing by the car wash to remove any corrosive road salt that might be lingering on your vehicle’s body.
