In 2011 the North American public shared a collective sigh - watching with great sadness as Ford sent its beloved Ranger across the sea, leaving only a few tire-tracks behind. This compact pick-up (which debuted in 1983) no longer had a place among the crowded market. It was instead unceremoniously retired from Canadian and U.S. production.
This may soon change.
According to the Daily Sun Knoxville, Ford is contemplating the return of the Ranger - and it’s also considering a new (and improved) hybrid engine. Recent rumors swirl that the automaker is planning to bring this compact back to North America in 2018. In its quest to further dominate the competition, however, it may use the relaunch as a chance to push its EcoBoost platform to the next level.
The 2018 Ranger may feature a hybrid engine (both electric and diesel motors are possible). This will allow it to generate best-in-class economy, which will prove a key element to winning driver approval. The compact market no longer belongs solely to Ford. Instead Chevrolet, Toyota, and Nissan have released a steady selection of half-ton drivetrains, earning both consumer trust and profits. New technology is needed to turn the proverbial tide.
Should Ford pair its Ranger with hybrid efficiency, it will surely attract drivers to dealerships in 2018... and redefine compact sales.
